Softball splits to open OAC play

MARIETTA, Ohio – Opening OAC action on Saturday, the Otterbein University softball team split a pair of games with Marietta College. In the first game, the Cardinals rallied to win 5-4 before dropping a 5-4 walkoff loss in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 5 Marietta 4

Marietta plated two runs in the home half of the first inning before the Cardinals answered in the top of the second. Maggie McVicker reached on an error and later came around to score on a two-out single coupled with a Pioneer error off the bat of Kylie Galowina.

The Pioneers extended their advantage in the third to a 3-1 margin, but the Cardinals struck in the top of the fourth to be within one run. Another error by Marietta would prove costly, as Emma Calkins reached to lead off the frame. McVicker followed by roping a double down the left field line, driving in Calkins for a 3-2 Pioneer lead. Marietta scored its final run of the contest in the fifth.

Trailing 4-2 in the sixth, the Cardinals rallied for a three-run sixth. Senior Rachel Miller led off the inning with a double to left center and advanced 60 feet when Calkins singled. Calkins used her speed to steal second, as an errant throw by the Pioneer catcher allowed Miller to cross. McVicker crushed her second double of the game and drove in another Otterbein run to tie the game at 4-4. With McVicker at third, freshman Katie Koulianos beat out a pinch hit infield single to drive in the go-ahead run for a 5-4 lead.

Sophomore Addison Yoder went the distance in the circle, hurling seven innings and allowing six hits while striking out six.

GAME TWO: Marietta 5 Otterbein 4

In the nightcap, Wilkins led off the contest with a triple down the right field line. Two batters later, she came around to score when Miller ripped a single up the middle for a 1-0 advantage. Similar to game one in a back-and-forth affair, the Pioneers tied the game in the third before Otterbein gained a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

Kaylie Eichorn's speed allowed the Cardinals to take the lead, advancing on a pickoff attempt and an error in the top of the fourth. Immediately the hosts had an answer waiting in the home half of the frame with a leadoff home run.

The Cardinals started the fifth with a Miller walk and a Calkins single. Miller came in to score when McVicker drove another two-bagger for a 3-2 advantage. Once more Marietta answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to take a 4-3 lead headed into the late innings. Calkins drove in the final Otterbein run in the sixth, but the Pioneers had the final say by walking off the Cardinals in the home half of the seventh.

The Cardinals will have a quick turnaround with a non-conference twinbill tomorrow at Kenyon College. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
