Softball splits with Kenyon on Sunday

GAMBIER, Ohio – In non-conference action on Sunday, the Otterbein University softball team split with Kenyon College. The Cardinal offense was tremendous all day, exploding for 11 runs in an 11-4 victory in game one. Otterbein dropped the second contest in extra innings, 6-5 on a walkoff single.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 11 Kenyon 4

Otterbein erupted for a 5-spot in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Junior Kennedi Endsley started the game with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a Kenyon error. With two in scoring position, Emma Calkins ripped a single to drive in Endsley for the early lead. Alex Ward followed with an RBI single to right for a quick 2-0 advantage. Two batters later, sophomore Bri Dowell provided the big blow, belting a 3-run home run to push the visitors ahead 5-0 early.

Despite a run by the Owls in the second, Otterbein put another crooked number on the board in the third, tacking on four runs for a 9-1 lead. Ella Pfaffl crushed a home run to center, driving in Calkins for the first two runs of the frame. Another Kenyon error and an RBI groundout off the bat of Amber Bradbury closed out the scoring in the third.

Otterbein plated its final two runs in the top of the fifth, courtesy of another error and a bases loaded walk issued to Rachel Miller. Dowell was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI, while Pfaffl and Bradbury each drove in a pair. Sophomore Addison Yoder hurled five innings to earn the win in the circle, scattering seven hits while walking just one hitter.

GAME TWO: Kenyon 6 Otterbein 5 (8 innings)

For the second time in as many days, the Cardinals fell in the nightcap in walkoff fashion. Scoreless after three, the Cardinals scored twice in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally. Maggie McVicker cranked a double to right and was lifted for Dowell as a pinch runner. Calkins' hot streak continued, doubling home Dowell for a 1-0 lead. Mae Meldrum followed, driving in Calkins with a single up the middle for a 2-0 cushion.

Kenyon answered in the home half of the frame with three runs. The Owls earned the three runs off four hits, a wild pitch and a passed ball. In the fifth, the Cardinals responded to regain the lead. Sophomore Bre Preston led off the inning with a single to center and swiped second. She came around to score on an RBI single from Kaylie Eichorn to tie the game at 3-3. Kameron Biederman and McVicker followed with RBI base knocks for a 5-3 Otterbein advantage.

The Owls immediately answered, taking advantage of a Cardinal error in the bottom of the fifth. Kenyon used four hits and an error to plate a pair of runs and even the game at 5-5. Kenyon earned the walkoff victory in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single up the middle.

McVicker was 3 for 4 in the loss, as the Cardinals smacked 11 hits.

The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday in their home opener. Otterbein will host the University of Mount Union for an OAC doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m.
