Game Recap: Softball |

Mount Union takes two from Otterbein softball

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In its 2026 home opener, the Otterbein University softball team was swept by the University of Mount Union. The Purple Raiders defeated the Cardinals by scores of 9-1, 11-0 on Sunday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Mount Union 9 Otterbein 1

Mount Union plated runs in four different innings, including 3-spots in both the fifth and seventh innings. The Purple Raiders pounded 14 hits in game one, holding a lead early on that the Cardinals could not overcome. Starter Kendyll Cahill held Otterbein hitless until the sixth inning when Caitlin Wilkins hit a single to left.

In the top of the seventh, the Cardinal defense turned a triple play to spark momentum going into the home half of the frame. With runners at first and second and nobody out, a line drive came right back to Kiley King, who fired to first to double off the runner. Heads up at first base, Emma Calkins threw a strike to Kaylie Eichorn at second to nab the second Purple Raider runner.

Otterbein scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Rachel Miller led off the inning with a double down the line and moved 60 feet on a wild pitch. Maggie McVicker drove in Miller on an RBI groundout to provide the lone Cardinal run.

GAME TWO: Mount Union 11 Otterbein 0 (5 innings)

From the jump, the Purple Raiders seized control, scoring twice in the first and adding six runs in the second. Only five of the 11 Mount Union runs were earned in the nightcap, as the visitors were able to take advantage of Cardinal miscues.

Wilkins and Eichorn recorded the lone Otterbein hits in the loss. Junior Maggie McVicker reached base twice, working 0-2 counts into walks. The Cardinals stranded seven runners in the second contest.

On Tuesday, the Cardinals will host John Carroll in a non-conference twinbill. Game times are currently set for 3 and 5 p.m.
