Otterbein Splits Doubleheader with John Carroll Behind Late-Inning Fireworks in Nightcap

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein softball delivered an electric response in Tuesday's home doubleheader at Rike Field, shaking off a 5-2 setback in the opener to storm back for a 5-4 victory in Game 2. The Cardinals racked up 14 total hits on the day and used a five‑run surge in the nightcap to secure the split.

Game One: John Carroll 5, Otterbein 2
John Carroll capitalized on early baserunners and a three‑run fifth to take the opener. The Blue Streaks pushed across a run in the first and later broke the game open with a trio of runs in the fifth.

Otterbein showed late life in the sixth when Rachel Miller singled and Maggie McVicker worked a walk before Emma Calkins delivered a two‑run single up the middle to trim the deficit. Calkins finished 1-for-3 with both RBI, while Caitlin Wilkins added a double. Addison Yoder and Kiley King combined for four strikeouts in the circle.

Game Two: Otterbein 5, John Carroll 4
The nightcap belonged to the Cardinals' resilience. After falling behind 4–0 through three innings, the Cardinals began their climb in the fourth. McVicker sparked the offense with a double to right center, and pinch‑runner Kayla Ferrell advanced on a wild pitch before Calkins punched an RBI single through the left side.

Otterbein erupted for four runs in the fifth to seize control. Emily Black ripped a leadoff double, Caitlin Wilkins followed with an RBI single, and an error kept the inning alive. McVicker then delivered the swing of the day, a two‑run double down the right‑field line to tie the game.

Moments later, Calkins struck again with her second RBI single, plating McVicker for a 5-4 lead.

From there, freshman Kaycee Berentz slammed the door. Entering in a bases‑loaded jam in the fifth, she tossed 2.2 innings of one‑hit, scoreless relief to earn her first collegiate win.
Wilkins, Black, McVicker, and Calkins all posted multi‑hit efforts as Otterbein out‑hit John Carroll 10-9.

The Cardinals travel next to Berea, Ohio for a conference doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace on Thursday.
