Men's lacrosse falls in defensive battle

WESTERVILLE – In a defensive battle, the Otterbein University men's lacrosse team came up short to Trine University, 8-4.

Otterbein got on the board just over three minutes into the game when sophomore Tyler Purden buried home a shot for an early lead. Trine responded with two goals in the period to capture a 2-1 advantage after the first quarter. In the second, the Cardinals tied the score with Gabe Thayer's first goal of the season, but once again Trine answered with a pair of goals before the break for a 4-2 halftime lead. 

Those two goals started a 4-0 run by the Thunder that extended into the third, asTrine led 6-2 with 3:36 remaining in the period. With two minutes remaining in the quarter, Otterbein cut the deficit to 6-3 when Zach Mulligan scored his eighth goal of the year. The teams combined for 48 turnovers in a rain-filled contest. The Thunder held the edge in shots (37-22) and was 10 of 16 at the faceoff X. Both teams were unable to capitalize on EMOs, with Trine going 0 for 3 and the Cardinals 0 for 5. The MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, Rocco Curatola, led Trine with a six goal performance. 

Zach Courie tallied 12 saves and picked up five ground balls for the hosts. 

The Cardinals will host Adrian College on Friday for a 2 p.m. faceoff.
