Mealey fans 12, Cardinals drop Spring Break opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Despite a 12-strikeout outing from freshman Nick Mealey, the Otterbein University baseball team dropped its spring break opener, 8-3 to Houghton.

The Highlanders broke out to a 4-0 lead plating a pair of runs in both the top of the first and again in the fifth. Otterbein closed the gap in the home half of the fifth inning, striking for all three of its runs.

Freshman Geoffrey Siess started the inning with a leadoff walk and moved to second on a fielder's choice. He came around to score the first Cardinal run when Calvin Mabry slapped a single the other way. Utilizing his speed, the sophomore stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. With Dylan Andrews aboard, he scored on the throwing error to trim the deficit in half. Another Highlander error allowed Mabry to cross, rounding out the scoring for the Cardinals.

Otterbein's three-run fifth would be all the offense they would get, as Houghton answered in the sixth with two runs for a 6-3 advantage. The Highlanders tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth inning for a solid five-run cushion.

As a team, the Cardinals were limited to just three hits, coming from Mabry, Jack Barber and Nolan James. Backed by 12 strikeouts from Mealey over 4.1 innings, the Cardinal pitching staff fanned 16 hitters on the day.

Tomorrow, Otterbein will play a twinbill against Dean College. Game times are set for 6 and 9 p.m.
