Barber's big night not enough in heartbreaking walkoff

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – After rallying to tie the game in the top of the ninth, the Otterbein University baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 loss in 10 innings to Dean College.

Freshman catcher Jack Barber had a monster day, going 4 for 5 with three RBI. He along with Cam Fisher turned in multi-hit performances, as Fisher and Evan Chmielewski both drove in a pair.

The Cardinals struck for one in the second, manufacturing a run that saw JT Gels scored on a Fisher single. Otterbein pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third when Chmielewski smacked a single to drive in Barber and Nolan James. For the third straight inning, Otterbein plated a run with a Barber RBI single in the top of the fourth.

Dean got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, exploding for five runs for a 5-4 advantage. The Bulldogs used three hits, coupled with an error and four walks issued to erase the four-run deficit. In the top of the sixth, Barber answered and pulled Otterbein ahead with a 2-run shot.

Dean tacked on runs in the sixth and eighth for a 7-6 lead. In the top of the ninth, the Cardinals put together a two-out rally to tie the game. Chmielewski worked a walk, and Fisher doubled the freshman home to knot the game. Unable to push across the go-ahead run and with the Cardinals shutting down Dean in the bottom of the inning, the game went to extras.

Otterbein stranded two runners in the top of the tenth, sending Dean into the home half of the frame with momentum. Three straight singles earned the walkoff victory for Dean.

The Cardinals continue their trip on Monday with a 3 p.m. first pitch against Penn College.
