Softball Splits Spring Games Day One

Clermont, FL – The Otterbein softball team earned a split as they opened their season on Sunday at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Cardinals fell 3-1 to St. Joseph's before rallying a win 9-5 against Curry College.

Otterbein opened the scoring in the second inning, manufacturing a run after Mae Meldrum and Emily Black reached and Kaylie Eichorn came around to score on a misplay in left field. But despite the early spark, the Cardinals couldn't break through again as Saint Joseph's strung together single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth to slip ahead 3–1.

Kayla Ferrell kept the offense alive with a pair of hits, and the Cards put runners on in five different innings. Addison Yoder battled through 5.2 innings in the circle, and Kiley King tossed a clean final frame to keep it close, but the Cardinals couldn't find the late-game swing they needed to make a comeback.

The Cardinals wasted little offensive opportunities in game two, scoring in four of their seven offensive frames. Otterbein kicked things off by hanging six runs in the first two innings and never looking back.

Caitlin Wilkins set the tone, reaching three times and ripping a two‑run triple as part of a four‑run second inning, while Kaylie Eichorn piled on with three hits and two RBI. Maggie McVicker delivered a clutch four‑RBI day, including a two‑run single in the fourth that kept the Cardinals in control.

After Curry clawed within three in the fifth, Kaycee Berentz slammed the door, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit to secure the victory. Otterbein finished with nine runs on nine hits.
The Cardinals hit the dirt again early tomorrow, March 8th, in back-to-back games starting at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
