Gels drives in three, Cardinals roll past OWU

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Backed by a four-run first, the Otterbein University baseball team avenged a Tuesday loss to Ohio Wesleyan, knocking off the Battling Bishops 9-3.

Three Cardinals finished the day 3 for 4 – Nolan James, JT Gels and Gavin Scott. Gels led the way with three RBI while James and Scott each drove in a pair. Darren Ramsey (1-2) tossed five innings, allowing two runs and scattering three OWU hits.

Gels got the Cardinals on the board first with a base hit off the fence in left, driving in Jack Barber for an early lead. Daniel Uhl followed with a double to right center to plate James and double the lead. After an RBI groundout off the bat of Cam Fisher, Scott drove in the fourth Cardinal run of the inning, smacking a first pitch single up to left for an early 4-0 advantage.

Otterbein tacked on three runs in the bottom of the second. Calvin Mabry reached on an error and swiped second and third. After Barber was hit by a pitch, James belted a triple to center to bring in both runners and inflate the lead to 6-0. One batter later, Gels got the job done, rolling over to second and plating James for a 7-0 advantage after two innings.

Fisher led off the bottom of the third with a double to left center and scored on a single up the middle from Scott. Otterbein's final run came in the bottom of the fourth when Gels blasted a home run the other way.

Despite three Ohio Wesleyan runs, the Cardinals built a sizable lead to create enough distance from the Battling Bishops.

The doubleheader with Muskingum, originally slated for Saturday, has been moved to Sunday due to inclement weather. Game times against the fighting Muskies remain at 1 and 4 p.m. with Senior Day festivities to follow.
