Game Recap: Baseball |

Powell passes Fishbaugh in career wins, baseball splits with No. 18 BW

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In thrilling fashion, George Powell became Otterbein baseball's winningest coach in program history on Thursday in a split with No. 18 Baldwin Wallace. Daniel Uhl's walkoff single in the tenth inning in game one gave the Cardinals a 1-0 victory before dropping a 16-7 decision in the nightcap.

With the victory in game one -- his 625th -- Powell passes Dick Fishbaugh's 624 career wins at the helm of the program. Fishbaugh led the Cardinals from 1966 to 1999 and was posthumously inducted into the Otterbein Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 1 Baldwin Wallace 0 (10 innings)

The first true threat from either team came in the top of the seventh for the Yellow Jackets. A walk, an error and a stolen base put runners at second and third with nobody out. Brady McClain worked out of the jam by inducing three straight groundouts, neither enough to advance a runner home to keep the score locked at 0-0.

Despite Otterbein getting a runner aboard in the ninth, the Cardinals could not push the go-ahead run across, sending the game into extras. In the top of the tenth, the Yellow Jackets once again put a pair in scoring position. Brady Heagen entered the jam with two away, getting the BW 2-hitter to pop out to Cam Fisher in short left field, sending the Cardinals back into the dugout with all of the momentum.

Nolan James was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved 90 feet on a sac bunt from JT Gels. On a 1-2 count, Uhl lined a base hit up the middle to drive in James and secure Powell's milestone win.

Heagen (1-0) earned the win in relief. Freshman starter Nick Mealey tossed five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five.

GAME TWO: Baldwin Wallace 16 Otterbein 7

Baldwin Wallace put up a quick two runs before the Cardinals rallied for a 5-spot in the bottom of the third. Gavin Scott and Dean Orchard singled to put two aboard with one out. Calvin Mabry beat out a bunt to load the bases for Jack Barber. The freshman tied the game, crushing a double to left center. James followed by lining a hard shot to right, driving in Mabry on the sac fly.

The inning continued when Gels worked a four pitch walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. On a pickoff move to second, the BW pitcher sailed the ball into center, allowing Barber to score from third. Gels went to advance to third, and on the throw in from the centerfielder, a second Yellow Jacket error allowed the sophomore to score for a 5-2 lead.

The teams continued trading blows, with Otterbein scoring two more in the bottom of the fifth. Orchard led off the inning with a single, swiped second and moved to third on a Mabry sac bunt before coming around to score on a passed ball. Otterbein took a 7-5 lead when Gels lifted a fly ball the other way that continued carrying towards the line for a double, driving in Barber.

BW responded with 11 unanswered runs to capture the momentum back and salvage the split. Otterbein committed six errors in the contest and allowed 10 free passes.

Orchard was 4 for 4 in game two with two runs scored.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals will head to Ohio Northern University for a twinbill against the Polar Bears. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
