Softball splits at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – On Tuesday, the Otterbein University team settled for a split with Ohio Wesleyan University. The Cardinals won the opener, 5-3 before falling in the nightcap by a 6-3 margin.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 5 Ohio Wesleyan 3

Speed helped the Cardinals push across two runs in the top of the first. Caitlin Wilkins beat out an infield single and Rachel Miller beat out a bunt to put two on. After a sac bunt from Kaylie Eichorn moved the pair 60 feet, Maggie McVicker smacked a single up the middle to drive in both runners for an early 2-0 advantage.

OWU struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Otterbein immediately responded in the fifth to regain the lead for good – all coming with two outs. McVicker ripped a single before Alex Newsome and Kylie Galownia drew walks to load the bases. Emily Black followed with the third walk issued to the visitors, tying the game at 3-3.

Sophomore Amber Bradbury pushed the Cardinals ahead for good, driving an RBI single to left, her second hit of the game. Otterbein added an insurance run when Wilkins walked with the bases still loaded for a 5-3 advantage.

Kiley King threw the first 3.1 innings before Kaycee Berentz finished the game in relief to earn the win. The freshman allowed just two hits and struck out four in 3.2 innings of work. Wilkins was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while McVicker turned in a 2 for 4, 2 RBI performance.

GAME TWO: Ohio Wesleyan 6 Otterbein 3

Ohio Wesleyan scored one in the third inning before Otterbein recorded a three-run fifth. A walk, a bunt single, and a stolen base put two in scoring position for Wilkins. Wilkins drove in Bri Dowell to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, freshman Katie Koulianos singled down the right field line to give Otterbein a 3-1 lead, bringing in Wilkins and Alex Ward

The Battling Bishops had an immediate response with a three-spot in the home half of the inning. OWU would go on to extend its lead to 6-3 in the sixth.

On Saturday, the Cardinals will resume OAC action with a doubleheader against Heidelberg. Game times against the Berg are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. with Senior Day festivities happening in pregame.
