Late rally falls short in 10-9 loss to Hanover

WESTERVILLE – A ninth-inning rally came up just short as the Otterbein University baseball team dropped its home finale, 10-9 on Sunday afternoon to Hanover College. Nolan James and JT Gels combined for a 6 for 10 effort with Gavin Scott driving in three.

Using a 3-run home run in the first, the Panthers claimed a quick lead. Otterbein answered in the home half of the inning when James crushed a one-out solo shot, his fifth long ball of the season. The Cardinals went back-to-back when Gels followed with a deep drive to right, cutting the Hanover lead to 3-2 after one. Otterbein tied the game in the third thanks to a sac fly off the bat of shortstop Cam Fisher, plating James.

The teams traded runs in the fourth, after Hanover scored in the top of the inning, Jack Barber laced a single up the middle to drive in Dean Orchard. The Cardinals took a 5-4 advantage in the fifth with Gels leading off the inning with a single and moving to third on a pair of wild pitches. Geoffrey Siess's RBI groundout brought in Gels for a slim Otterbein lead.

Once more, the teams traded runs in the seventh inning. A Hanover run in the top of the frame was answered by an RBI single from Scott. In the eighth, the Panthers scored three runs off two hits and three free passes. Hanover extended its lead to 10-6 in the ninth, but the Cardinals would not go down quietly.

A leadoff single from James was followed by Gels reaching on an error, putting two aboard for Fisher. The freshman delivered with an RBI single to trim the deficit to two runs. Scott followed with a deep triple to left, plating both Fisher and Gels. Despite the Cardinals getting the tying run to third base twice, the hosts were unable to push across a tenth run.

Otterbein will wrap up the season on Saturday with a twinbill at Capital. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m. with the Battle for the Oar taking place in game two.
