Four interceptions fuel football to 35-14 road win

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Backed by 28 unanswered points, the Otterbein University football team throttled Wilmington College, 35-14. The Quakers led 14-7 after one quarter, but fired off a dominant final three quarters to earn the OAC win. 

Senior quarterback Kace Kinnamon was an extremely efficient 17 for 21 for 273 yards and a pair of touchdowns, as the Cardinals racked up 475 yards of total offense. 

Defensively, the Cardinals picked off four Quaker passes and were led by Cullen Dent's nine tackles, including 3.5 for loss. Freshman Eli Helton added eight tackles and an interception, while Donovan Delph also registered his first collegiate pick – playing the ball perfectly and undercutting the Wilmington receiver to record the interception. 

Senior kicker Braylon Balandra was a perfect 5 of 5 in PATs. 
Wilmington got on the board first, capitalizing on a blocked punt at the end of Otterbein's drive. After blocking a punt the Quakers picked up the loose ball and found the end zone for an early 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. On the ensuing possession, the Cardinals tied the score at 7-7. On the first play from scrimmage, Daniel Shaffer spun out of two tackles for a 72-yard catch and run, setting Otterbein up at the Wilmington 8-yard line. One play later, Kinnamon connected with Tyrese Buchanan for an 8-yard touchdown, and a Balandra PAT tied the game.

In the final minutes of the opening quarter, the hosts pulled ahead, 14-7. Otterbein immediately responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive to knot the score at 14. On the second play of the second quarter, Kinnamon found junior Grant Hartley on a fade, igniting the scoring run for the Cardinals. The Quakers were set up to regain the lead, until a deep ball from Miles Hostetler was picked off by freshman Carter Watson, ending the Quaker threat.

Wilmington once again threatened on their next possession, but newly-turned safety Cayden Lassiter stepped in front of a Miles Hostetler pass and returned it 55 yards for a pick six, vaulting the visitors ahead, 21-14 – a lead that held into halftime. 

Otterbein ate up the clock for the majority of the third quarter, controlling the time of possession. After a scoreless third, the Cardinals extended their lead to 28-14 just 35 seconds into the final period. On a third and goal, Duke Corley bulldozed his way into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run. 

Knocking on the door once more, the Quakers had the ball at the Otterbein 24-yard line. On a fourth and 12, a quarterback scramble was stopped short thanks to Dent and Lasstiter, turning the hosts over on downs and preserving the two score lead. Otterbein's final score of the night came when Ishhod Diomande burst up the middle and broke a Quaker tackle for a 24-yard touchdown run.

The win snaps a seven game losing skid for the Cardinals – their first win over Wilmington since 2018.

Next Saturday, the Cardinals host Marietta College in their Homecoming game. Kickoff against the Pioneers is set for 2 p.m.
