Written November 23, 2009 by Adam Prescott

ADRIAN, MICHIGAN – The Otterbein women’s basketball team split a pair of games over the weekend, falling 89-80 to Defiance then turning around to grab a 65-53 victory over Waynesburg at the Adrian tournament.

Otterbein attempted to rally from a 15 point halftime deficit, cutting the lead to 67-64 on a pair of free throws from freshman Rachel Snedegar with 6:12 remaining in the game.

The Cards hung close, and trailed by just five when Snedegar made a layup at the 2:54 mark.

However, Defiance went on a quick 9-2 run over the next two minutes, and eventually earned the 89-80 victory.

Five players scored in double-digits for Otterbein, led by sophomore Kristi Kotterman’s 17.

Senior Katy Miller registered a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds while sophomore Shea McCoy, playing her first game as a Cardinal, tallied 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

Snedegar and senior Karli Volkmer each chipped in 10 points.

The second game of the tournament saw the Cards jump out to a 19-9 lead against Waynesburg on a layup from sophomore Katie Stallard at the 10:12 mark of the opening half.

Otterbein carried a 38-27 edge into the half.

Waynesburg cut the deficit to 42-37 with 13:08 left to play on a layup from Hannah Hunter. However, the Cards responded by going on a 13-5 run over the next seven-plus minutes to take a 55-42 advantage. The run was capped by a layup from McCoy with 5:19 showing on the clock.

Elisha Jones brough Waynesburg to within five (57-52) again with a little under three minutes to play, but OC outscored the Yellow Jackets 8-1 over the remainder of the contest to earn the 65-53 win.

Miller, who was named to the All-Tournament team, tallied a team-best 11 points to couple with five rebounds in the game. After going 0-for-4 from the field the day before, senior post Allison Huettel responded to shoot 5-for-9, recording ten points and hauling in a game-high 14 rebounds.

Sophomore Natalie Conkle added ten points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The team will next travel down south to participate in the Southwestern Tournament, with the first contest against Austin (TX) set for Friday at 3 p.m (CST).
