WESTERVILLE, OHIO – Senior Katy Miller topped the 1,000 point plateau, and Otterbein (8-10, 5-6 OAC) used a huge second half to down Heidelberg (4-14, 3-8 OAC) Wednesday evening in the Rike Center.
The win gives OC its fourth victory in the last five games and pushes the team into a sixth-place tie with Wilmington in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings.
Heidelberg opened the game with six offensive rebounds in the first three minutes, and held a slim 15-14 lead after Lyndsey DaVault came off the bench and nailed back-to-back three pointers, the second coming at 11:16 of the first half.
Otterbein bounced back and opened a 23-17 lead when Miller made a layup with 7:46 to play before the half.
With the game tied at 25-25 with 3:17 remaining in the half, the Student Princes outscored the Cards 9-2 over the remaining minutes, including a deep buzzer-beating three pointer from DaVault to take a 34-27 advantage into intermission.
Heidelberg hauled in 13 offensive rebounds in the first half, but were able to score just six second-chance points. Otterbein notched 14 points in the paint by halftime.
The Cardinals stormed out of the locker room and outscored the Berg 13-3 over the first six and a half minutes, assuming a 41-37 lead after another Miller layup, this time off an assist from junior Tonee Hutton.
DaVault buried a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, but Otterbein would score 15 of the game’s next 17 points to break the game open, taking a 56-42 lead after a fast-break layup from sophomore Katie Stallard with just under nine minutes to go.
The Cardinals kept the pressure on, and again scored 15 of the next 17 points, all part of a 30-4 run that would put the Cards ahead 71-44 with 3:54 remaining.
Stallard buried 7-of-11 from the floor en route to a game and career-high 19 points.
Miller, who entered the game ten points shy of 1,000 for her career, scored 12 and now stands at 1,002 for her career. She reached the century mark on a fast-break layup with 11:31 to go in the second half.
Leading scorer Shea McCoy scored ten while Hutton nailed 3-of-3 shots from behind the arc for nine points.
DaVault led the Student Princes with 12.
Otterbein held Heidelberg to .288 shooting from the floor, including just .194 in the second half.
The Cards will look to keep the momentum going when they host cross-town rival Capital Saturday afternoon as part of a men’s and women’s double-header. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
