WESTERVILLE, OHIO - Otterbein (2-12, 1-4 OAC) suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of visiting Capital (9-4, 2-2 OAC) Saturday afternoon at Clements Field.
Otterbein saw a nice opportunity early on when junior Kurt Gallant sent a ball into the box and it just missed the outstretched leg of Tyler Daniels. Freshman Jordan Ricks was on the backside, but his shot attempt went wide and the game remained scoreless.
Capital broke the scoreless match in the 25th minute when Chris Fountain converted a header off a corner kick from Aaron Pound.
The Crusaders pushed the lead to 2-0 right before halftime (41:58) when Zach Inman beat an Otterbein defender and slid a pass to Ian Warmbrodt, who corraled the ball in the box and rocketed a shot past the keeper.
Otterbein regrouped at the half, and sophomore Tyler Daniels cut the deficit in half in the 54th minute when he beat a defender up the middle and slipped a shot home for the score.
The Cards saw a few prime opportunities down the stretch, but the shots were just off target as Capital would hang on to preserve to 2-1 victory.
Cardinal goalkeeper Alex Kamphaus turned in an impressive effort between the posts with multiple save opportunities, including stopping a Capital penalty kick in the 76th minute. He finished with eight saves.
The Crusaders held a 21-12 shot advantage, and took seven corners compared to Otterbein's five.
Otterbein returns to action Tuesday afternoon, hosting Marietta at Clements Field. Starting time is set for 4 p.m.
