WESTERVILLE, OHIO – The Otterbein University women’s volleyball team improved to 18-4 on the season Saturday afternoon, turning back Baldwin-Wallace College in three sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-14) in the Rike Center.
Otterbein jumps to 3-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play with the victory, while the loss drops the Yellow Jackets fall to 13-10 on the season and 1-2 against league opponents.
Baldwin-Wallace hung tough early, trailing just 13-10 in the opening set. However, the Cardinals would settle in to widen the margin and take game one 25-17.
The Jackets hopped out to a quick lead in set two, but the advantage would be brief as Otterbein used a workmanlike effort to draw even and eventually spring to a 25-21 victory.
Otterbein carried the momentum over to set three, staying full throttle and winning 25-14.
Junior Kristen Bennett turned in another impressive performance, tying a career-high 14 kills to go along with two errors on 21 attempts (.571).
“We always say that a point is a point, but to have a little force behind a kill is always a help,” said head coach Monica McDonald. “Every team needs that one player who intimidates the other team, and Kristen does that for us.”
Sophomore Annie Juenger blasted ten kills and two errors on 25 attacks, while sophomore Liz Palmer hit .462 for the match with six kills on 13 chances.
Junior Ally Nagle connected on nine kills of her own and finished the match with a .300 hitting percentage. The team as a whole hit .327 for the match compared to just .147 for B-W.
Freshman setter Tabatha Piper distributed a match-best 35 assists, while Juenger and senior libero Lindsey Russell combined for 24 digs.
The team next travels to take on Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Starting time from Ada is schedule for 7 p.m. The Cards defeated ONU last season for the first time in 45 meetings.
