BEXLEY, OHIO - The Otterbein University women’s basketball team suffered a 69-56 setback at cross-town rival Capital University Wednesday evening.
The loss drops the Cardinals to 10-12 on the season and 6-9 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the victory pushes Capital to 14-7 overall and 9-6 against league foes.
Otterbein trailed just 16-14 after a jumper from Shea McCoy midway through the first half, and tied the game at 28-28 before the Crusaders scored the final six points of the first half to lead 34-28 at the break.
Capital carried the momentum over to the second half, extending its advantage to 41-28 and keeping a 13 point margin at 47-34 by the 13:46 mark.
The Cardinals continued to fight and cut the deficit to eight, at 53-48, when senior Sarah Esterkamp made a layup with 9:42 remaining, but Capital quickly pushed the lead back to 14 before earning the 69-56 victory.
Sophomore Hannah Day led Otterbein with 16 points while McCoy and Kristi Kotterman tallied 15 and 13, respectively.
The Cards shot just 3-of-23 from beyond the arc, and 11-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Hillary Kuhs scored 20 for Capital, which connected on 20-of-24 free-throws.
Otterbein returns to Westerville for its final home game this season, hosting Muskingum University at 5 p.m. Saturday evening. The Cards narrowly fell 58-57 to the Muskies earlier this season in New Concord.
