BEXLEY, OHIO – After allowing 14 unanswered points to start overtime, the Otterbein University Cardinals fell to the Capital University Crusaders 73-62 Wednesday night at the Capital Center.
Otterbein drops its second in a row and falls to 10-3, 4-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, Capital moves to 8-4, 3-2 in conference play.
On the final possession of regulation, with the score tied 59-59, Otterbein had multiple opportunities to win. Neither a lay-up by senior guard Kristi Kotterman nor a put-back attempt by junior forward Hannah Day would fall and the teams headed to the extra session.
Capital, whose largest lead in regulation was five, exploded in overtime with 14 points before the Cards could answer. The Crusaders made 4-of-6 shot attempts and 6-of-8 from the free throw line in overtime. Otterbein committed three turnovers and shot 1-of-7 from the field.
Senior guard Shea McCoy led the Cardinals with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Kotterman added 12 in the losing effort. Junior Rachel Snedegar hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
Neither team took control in a first half that saw 11 lead changes and two ties. Otterbein held a one-point lead late in the first half before senior guard Shea McCoy sank a three pointer just prior to the buzzer to give the Cardinals a 32-28 lead heading into the break.
The second half played out similar to the first with neither team taking complete command of the game. Capital’s Shalena Hawkins put the Crusaders up 53-48 with 5:57 remaining in the game. Otterbein answered with seven consecutive points, including a three pointer by McCoy to put the Cardinals up 55-53 with under four minutes left in the contest.
Capital responded with six unanswered to make the game 59-57. Kotterman hit a jumper from the low-post to even the score up with 48 seconds left in the game.
Otterbein returns to action when they travel to New Concord, to take on Muskingum University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
