Game Notes
WESTERVILLE, Ohio--Otterbein University takes on top-ranked University of Mount Union Saturday in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Otterbein, 5-1 overall, shares third place in the OAC with Baldwin Wallace University (5-1), each 4-1 in league play. Mount Union (6-0) and Heidelberg University (6-0) share the top spot, both 5-0.
The Cardinals, under first-year head coach Tim Doup, come into the game off their first loss of the season, a 21-0 decision to Heidelberg last Saturday in Tiffin.
“What sticks out in my mind about the Heidelberg game is being first and goal twice and not scoring any points,” Doup said. “In a game like that you’ve got to be able to score points. We also couldn’t run the ball. We became one dimensional.”
Otterbein, who lost quarterback Aaron Kingcade and leading wide receiver Steven Carpenter to injury in the game, had drives reach the Heidelberg 9- and 8-yard lines, but came up empty each time.
“Defensively, I thought we settled down after the initial kickoff that resulted in a seven-play drive for a touchdown,” Doup said.
Otterbein held the Berg to just two touchdowns over the final 57 minutes of the game. Heidelberg entered the game averaging 49 points an outing.
Mount Union, under 27th-year head coach Larry Kehres, kept its record spotless with its fifth-straight shutout, this time a 62-0 victory over Capital University last Saturday in Alliance. Cornerback Isaiah Scott returned interceptions for touchdowns of 84 and 40 yards as the nation’s No. 1 ranked defense held Capital to 107 yards.
The Purple Raiders come into the game with 107 consecutive regular-season road wins, dating back to a 21-18 loss at Baldwin Wallace in 1991.
At halftime, the Otterbein Athletic Department will recognize student-athletes and teams from the 2011-12 academic year that advanced into NCAA championship play. Those include the women’s volleyball team, the men’s golf team, and track and field athletes Kristen Bennett and Austin Curbow.
Following Mount Union, the Cardinals travel to take on crosstown rival Capital next Saturday in Bexley. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
