DELAWARE, Ohio – The Otterbein University volleyball team swept a pair of matches at the Ohio Wesleyan University tri-match Saturday afternoon, helping give head coach Monica McDonald the 100th victory of her career.

The Cardinals turned back Allegheny College (Pa.) in four sets to open the day, winning by scores of 25-12, 21-25, 25-14, 25-12. Otterbein then topped host Ohio Wesleyan 25-23, 25-13, 25-22 to finish up.

McDonald, currently in her sixth-season at the helm, reaches 100 victories despite just winning 13 over her first two seasons. She has since elevated the program to one of the best in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), compiling a record of 87-27 over the last three-plus seasons. Her current record now stands at 100-76.

“It was a great moment and it makes me feel good to be here with this group of players, especially the upperclassmen,” McDonald said afterwards. “These juniors and seniors have been here for a lot of the turnaround we’ve made together. It’s a nice accomplishment for all of us.”

Freshman Jessica Hinkel led the team with nine kills in the Allegheny match, while senior Michelle Gernert had eight. Emily Bostian, Kendel Kellogg, and Krystin Estes all had seven kills, and sophomore Kim Barker also contributed nicely by hitting .714 (six kills on seven attempts).

Sophomore Kayla Radekin dished out a career-high 41 assists in the winning effort, while Evelyn Carus finished with 20 digs.

Senior Kristen Bennett turned in an impressive outing against Ohio Wesleyan, recording 15 kills and no errors on 28 attempts to finish with a .536 percentage. Barker chipped in 11 kills on 17 attacks while setter Tabatha Piper had 26 assists.

Otterbein has four matches away from home next week, starting with Mount Vernon Nazarene Thursday at 7 p.m.

“The first half of the season was good for us in terms of playing stiff competition,” McDonald explained. " I also think it will be nice in the latter half where we have fewer matches and can focus on some specific aspects of our play. We'll continue working on the small things that make us better and keep our focus on that goal of winning an OAC championship.”
