No. 13 Otterbein Improves to 14-6 Overall

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University Volleyball team, ranked No. 13 in the latest national poll, won three of four matches over the weekend to improve to 14-6 this season.

The Cardinals, playing without two regulars in the rotation, were dealt a five-set loss at NAIA Mount Vernon Nazarene Thursday evening by scores of 17-25, 25-21, 14-15, 25-19, 11-15.

Senior Kristen Bennett led the way offensively with 14 kills in the match, followed by 12 and 10 kills, respectively, from senior Michelle Gernet and junior Liz Palmer.

Sophomore setter Tabatha Piper finished with seven kills, and no errors, on 14 attempts (.500) to go along with her 33 assists, which tied for match-high. Junior libero Emily Caldwell posted a match-best 26 digs.

Otterbein bounced back to win in straight-sets at league-foe Baldwin Wallace University Friday evening, moving to 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference after winning 25-14, 25-23, 25-17.

Palmer turned in another solid performance by hitting .520, posting 15 kills, and two errors, on 25 total attempts. Bennett registered eight kills on 17 chances while junior Annie Juenger had nine kills, four errors, on 26 attacks.

Piper handed out 39 assists and Caldwell came up with 16 digs on the back line. Freshman Lauren Beitel and Gracie Staten also contributed nicely with 12 digs a piece.

Otterbein secured two victories at the Capital Invitational Saturday afternoon, starting with a victory over Alma (Mich.) by counts of 25-18, 25-10, 25-20.

The team then followed with a four-set win over Albion (Mich.), winning 25-16, 25-20, 20-25, 27-25.

Bennett finished with 12 kills on 20 attempts in the Alma match, followed by 11 kills from Juenger. Otterbein hit .330 for the match, and limited Alma's offensive behind 48 digs, 17 coming from Caldwell.

Sophomore Kendel Kellogg turned in a career-high 13 kills in the Albion victory, adding nine digs as well. Freshman Krystin Estes got in the mix with 11 kills while sophomore Kayla Redkin distrubuted 38 helpers.

The Cards totaled 24 service aces over the four weekend outings but also committed 36 service errors, with16 coming at Mount Vernon.
