WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University men's soccer tallied its first conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon, turning back Muskingum University, 2-0, at Clements Field.
The Cardinals move to an even 6-6 on the season with the win, improving to 1-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) as a result. The Muskies, meanwhile, fall to 5-8 this season and 0-3 against the league.
Otterbein junior Jared Pulliam struck early, scoring his ninth goal of the season just 4:25 into the match by beating a defender and striking a left-footed shot over the Muskie goalkeeper.
Junior Conor Holland helped extend the Cardinal lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute. Holland had his penalty kick saved by Muskie keeper Matthias Buchner, but remained alert and charged in to bury the rebound into the net.
Otterbein controlled most of the possession throughout the second half, seeing Pulliam rope a handful of shots in the box that just missed the mark. The lead would be enough, however, as the Cardinal defense stood strong and used a key save from goalkeeper Kyle Ripma in the 74th minute to help preserve the shutout.
The Cards held a 26-7 edge in shots and also finished with a slim 4-2 advantage for corner kicks. Buchner and Will Hess each made four saves in splitting time in goal for the visitors, while Ripma ended with five.
Otterbein returns to action Tuesday afternoon, hosting Ohio Northern University at 4 p.m.
