SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Otterbein University volleyball, ranked eighth in the most recent AVCA national poll, came away with a 1-3 record from the competitive Wittenberg University Fall Classic over the weekend.
The Cardinals, now 9-3 on the season, travel to Northwestern of Ohio Tuesday evening before heading to the Carnegie Mellon Invitational Sept. 20-21.
Otterbein tallied its lone victory of the weekend to begin the action on Friday, turning back the College of Mount St. Joseph in straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-12, 25-23.
Senior Annie Juenger, the reigning Ohio Athletic Conference "Player of the Week," tallied a match-high 15 kills and redshirt freshman Maddy Shelley blasted in 12. Setter Tabatha Piper handed out 33 assists while Juenger and classmate Emily Caldwell combined for 25 digs.
The Cards weren't as fortunate in Friday's nightcap, falling in three sets to No. 5-ranked Hope College (Mich.) by counts of 17-25, 22-25, 21-25. Juenger and Shelley combined for 21 of the team's 35 kills, but the Cards were only able to hit .162 compared to .318 for the Flying Dutch.
Hope All-American Jenna Grasmeyer posted a match-best 15 kills in the winning effort.
Otterbein lost a four-set affair with the host Tigers to begin day two, falling 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 18-25.
Otterbein limited Wittenberg, ranked No. 10 nationally, to hitting .225 for the match, but the Cards committed 11 service errors and hit just .182 themselves. Juenger and junior Kendel Kellogg each registered 11 kills with Piper finishing at 36 assists.
Otterbein finished out its stay with a three-set loss to the nation's top-ranked team, Calvin College (Mich.) by scores of 12-25, 19-25, 22-25.
Juenger tallied a match-high 17 kills, but also posted nine errors on a staggering 50 attempts throughout the contest. No other Cardinal had more than five kills.
Piper had five kills and no errors on 13 attempts, hitting .385 and distributing 25 helpers. Otterbein had eight service aces and hit just .178 to Calvin's .319.
Maggie Kamp and Megan Rietema posted a combined 21 kills for the Knights, with Rietema also handing out 32 assists.
