LEXINGTON, Va. – Otterbein University, ranked 14th nationally, stayed perfect on the season and improved to 8-0 by sweeping all four matches at the Washington and Lee Invitational over the weekend.
The Cardinals topped No. 5-ranked Christopher Newport University in four sets (25-14, 17-25, 25-11, 25-15) to begin play Friday. Otterbein used a handful of service aces near the back-end of the third set, and was able to carry the momentum over to the fourth en route to victory.
Outside hitter Annie Juenger posted a match-high 16 kills while Kendel Kellogg had nine of her own on the other side. Setter Tabatha Piper dished out 35 assists and libero Emily Caldwell led all players with 21 digs defensively. The Tan and Cardinal also tallied nine service aces in the match.
The team continued its hot stretch into the second session, downing the host Generals in straight sets by counts of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-17.
Otterbein was in an 11-5 hole in the second set, but found its stride to win 20 of the next 28 points and grab control of the match. Washington and Lee hung close at 19-17 in the final set before the Cards ran off six-straight points to end the contest.
Juenger led the way again, hitting .414 with a stat line of 13 kills and one error on 29 attempts. She also had nine digs.
Otterbein hit .333 as a team in the match while holding the Generals to a .096 percentage.
The Cardinals returned to the court Monday morning and walked away with a four-set victory over Meredith College (N.C.), winning 25-16, 23-25, 25-13, 25-18.
Juenger posted a team-best 12 kills against the Avenging Angels while Kellogg and Kasey White adding nine and eight, respectively. Otterbein used a trio of setters in the last match, getting 14 assists from Piper and Kayla Radekin and 12 from freshman Lauren Blumberg.
Otterbein concluded the weekend by turning back Southern Virginia University in three frames, 25-18, 25-16, 25-13.
Juenger, 16 kills, and Kellogg, 14 kills, led the way again on the offensive side while Lauren Beitel had a Cardinal-best 12 digs on the back line. Piper handed out 37 assists as the team hit an imprssive .477 in the match.
Kellogg was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, as both she and Juenger earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
Otterbein returns to action next weekend, traveling to the prestigous Wittenberg Fall Classic Sept. 13-14. The Cardinals will face off against three top-10 teams at the event in Hope College, Calvin College, and the host Tigers.
