Slow Start Dooms Cardinals in Home Loss to Wilmington

Box Score
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal women's basketball team attempted a second-half rally Wednesday evening before ultimately suffering a 70-57 defeat at the hands of visiting Wilmington College inside the Rike Center.

The Quakers (7-7, 4-3 OAC) started strong from the field, nailing their first four three-point attempts en route to a 15-5 lead after seven minutes of action.

Wilmington stayed hot from the field while the Cardinals were cold, running all the way to a 42-22 halftime advantage. The Quakers 53.6 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes while Otterbein went just 8 of 31 and missed all seven three-pointers.

The Cardinals (5-9, 1-6 OAC) began their attempt to climb back after the break, cutting the Quaker lead to 13, at 49-36, after a turnaround jumper from sophomore Amariah Huck at the 10:22 mark.

Back-to-back buckets from junior Mary Corbett brought the lead down to 59-49 as the game clock moved under 5:00, and a trifecta from classmate Madi Miller made it an eight-point game with exactly one minute to play. However, Otterbein would not get any closer the rest of the way as Wilmington left with the win.

Corbett tied for a game-high 16 points off the bench, shooting 6 of 12 from the floor to mark her highest scoring total of the season. Chelsea Reed contributed 11 points, seven coming at the charity stripe, while freshman Taylor Pifher added 10.

Junior forward Tabatha Piper, the OAC's third-leading scorer entering the night, was held to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting. She did, however, bring down a game-best 14 rebounds.

Haley Howard and Spencer Robles each scored 16 to lead Wilmington, which cooled off in the second half to finish with a 37.5 percent shooting night from the floor. The Quakers buried 11 of 24 three-pointers compared to Otterbein only converting 3 of 15 from long distance.

Otterbein will finish out the week at home in the Rike Center, hosting Heidelberg University Saturday at 3 p.m. The Cards swept the season series with the Student Princes a year ago.
