Cardinals Fall to John Carroll in Three Close Sets

Box Score
WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University dropped its first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) match of the season Tuesday evening, coming up on the wrong end of three close sets with visiting John Carroll University in women's volleyball action.

The Cardinals, falling by scores of 22-25, 24-26, 21-25, now sit 9-10 on the season (2-1 OAC) and will be back in action Thursday evening, 7 p.m., at Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Both sides traded points early on in the first, seeing a tie at 6-6 before JCU opened a 13-8 lead. Otterbein responded with a 7-2 run out of a timeout to draw even, at 15-15, but the Streaks would ultimately prevail by winning four of the final five points in the game.

The Cardinals dug themselves a hole and faced a 17-11 deficit in set two, but caught fire behind the serve of junior Gracie Staten to embark on a quick 7-1 scoring spurt and close to within a point, 19-18. The set then saw ties at 21, 22, 23 and 24 before John Carroll managed to capture two points in a row.

Otterbein flew out to a 9-1 lead in the third frame, and appear to be in line to extend the match by holding a 15-8 edge midway through. JCU slowly fought back by taking advantage of a few Cardinal miscues and winning some critical points, ultimately out-scoring the Cards 17-6 down the stretch.

Senior Kendel Kellogg turned in a match-high 15 kills for Otterbein, hitting .379 on the night and marking the only Cardinal with more than six kills. Freshman Megan Volosin added exactly six on 18 attempts.

Senior Kim Barker, coming off a 21-kill performance at Capital University and top-3 in the league for kills and hitting percentage, was held to just three kills while committing five errors.

Alexa Webber blasted 13 kills to lead three JCU players in double figures. Setter Kit O'Shaugnessy, the reigning OAC Freshman of the Year, handed out 33 assists as the Blue Streaks hit .229 compared to Otterbein's .170 output.
