Cards to Host Ohio Northern on Senior Day

WESTERVILLE, Ohio—The Otterbein University football team closes out the 2014 regular season Saturday, hosting Ohio Northern University at 1:30 p.m. It will be Senior Day.

The two teams will be battling for sole possession of fourth place, possibly a share of third, in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

"This is probably one of the biggest games of the season, to spring us into next year," said Otterbein head coach Tim Doup. "Plus, as always, it's better to send your seniors out with a win. It just makes the day a lot better. This senior class has been great. There is nothing more I want than to send them out with a win."

A victory would also give Otterbein, who is saying goodbye to a class of 19 seniors, a winning record of 6-4 after going 5-5 last season. The 19 seniors, along with their parents, will be recognized at the game Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.

The Cardinals, coming off back-to-back losses to third-ranked University of Mount Union and sixth-ranked John Carroll University, share fourth place with the Polar Bears, each 5-3 in the conference.

Otterbein committed five turnovers, with three of them eventually leading to touchdowns, in last week's 66-13 loss to John Carroll in University Heights. Quarterback Brick Davis completed 14 of 29 pass attempts for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Slot receiver Ryan Thombs led the Cardinals with eight catches for a career-high 122 yards and one TD.

Ohio Northern heads into the game riding a four-game winning streak. The Polar Bears defeated Wilmington College, 50-15, last Saturday in Ada. Quarterback Patrick Angle completed 16 of 27 pass attempts for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Devon Price caught seven balls for 111 yards to become Ohio Northern's all-time receptions leader, with 151. Tailback Justin Magazine rushed for 112 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.

The Polar Bears have had several close calls this season, most notably, a loss to John Carroll, 17-10, and wins over Baldwin Wallace University, 37-35, and Capital University, 38-31. Northern also lost to Heidelberg University in a shoot-out, 69-52.

Otterbein is 3-3 over the last six meetings with Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears won, 42-21, last season in Ada.

"It's the same as last year, exact same scenario," Doup said about last season's meeting in Ada, with Otterbein needing a win to get to 6-4. "I think we are evenly matched just like last year. We lost our starting quarterback in the second series and things went array after that.

"But no, Ohio Northern is a good football team," Doup continued. "They are going to be big, strong and physical—great quarterback, good running back and good receiver."
