Box Score 2 CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Otterbein University women's basketball team came away with a split at the Julie Costello Memorial Classic over the weekend, defeating La Roche College on day one before a second-day loss to Shawnee State University.
The event was hosted by Thomas More College, which entered the week ranked second in the nation.
Day 1 vs. La Roche (67-57 win)The Cardinals slowly built a lead against the Redhawks on day one, getting the advantage to 14 by the 8:21 mark of the first half before eventually taking a sizeable 37-20 cushion into halftime.
La Roche then began to chip away at Otterbein's margin as the second half progressed, ultimately trimming the deficit down to just a possession, at 47-45, with 7:47 remaining on the game clock.
Otterbein responded on its next possession with a three-pointer from Cheyenne Hartley-Carr, and also received buckets on the next-two trips down the floor courtesy of Amariah Huck and Abby Miduri.
The Redhawks refused to go away quietly, getting back to within two points with just over three minutes remaining. Two free throws from Huck bumped the edge back to four before an old-fashioned three-point play from senior Mary Corbett helped propel the Cards to victory down the stretch.
Corbett turned in her best game of the season, going 6 of 10 from the field and 8 of 10 at the charity stripe for a season-high 21 points. She also hauled in a game-best eight rebounds.
Huck chipped in 11 points for Otterbein, which shot .545 from the field compared to just a .349 effort from La Roche. The Cardinals finished with a 25-3 advantage in bench scoring.
Day 2 vs. Shawnee State (70-55 loss)NAIA opponent Shawnee State built an 11-point lead midway through the opening half, but the Cardinals hung tough and only trailed by one, at 25-24, with 4:07 to play before intermission.
The Bears (8-2) eventually took an eight-point lead into halftime before opening the game up in the second half. Shawnee began the second period with an 18-4 run spanning the first-six minutes that would put the Cardinals in too big of a hole.
Huck tallied team-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds to lead four Cardinals scoring in double figures on the afternoon. Â Corbett and Chelsea Reed each scored 11 while Taylor Pifher contributed 10 off the bench. Both Huck and Corbett were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Ali Zievernik totaled a game-high 18 points for Shawnee State, which held a 43-31 rebounding margin and limited the Cardinals to just a 2 of 15 mark from behind the arc.
Otterbein will be back in action Wednesday evening, hosting Ohio Northern University at 7:30 p.m. in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
