Game NotesCoach Doup's Weekly Radio ShowWESTERVILLE, Ohio—The Otterbein University football team, fresh off a 20-0 win over Marietta College at Homecoming, hits the road, traveling to Wilmington College Saturday for a night Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Wilmington.
Â
The Cardinals, 1-1 overall, sit in a five-way tie for first place in the OAC at 1-0. The Quakers, 0-2 overall, come into the game off a 34-21 OAC loss at Capital University last Saturday.
Â
"Very relieved," was how Otterbein head coach Tim Doup described his feelings after Otterbein's victory over Marietta.
Â
"I told everyone that I thought I was more nervous for this game than I was in my first game as head coach because of the turf dedication, Homecoming, and all of the alumni present," Doup said. "I felt a lot of pressure last week."
Â
Wilmington, meanwhile, gave Capital all it could handle, but committed five turnovers in the loss in Bexley. The Quakers could convert on just two of five trips into the red zone, with one series ending in a Crusader pick-six.
Â
"They did a great job against Capital," Doup said. "I thought they played even with them throughout the game, but they turned the ball over twice inside the Capital 20-yard line."
Â
Wilmington, playing two different quarterbacks at Capital, churned out 412 yards of balanced offense, with 191 yards passing and 221 yards rushing. Chase Manica rushed for 119 yards on 19 carries. Standout receiver Jeremy Duncan caught four balls for 74 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown reception for Wilmington's last score of the game.
Â
Back in Westerville, defense was the name of the game in Otterbein's OAC opening win against Marietta. Otterbein held the Pioneers under 300 yards and made two interceptions in the win. The Cardinals stopped four straight runs after the Pioneers faced first-and-goal on the Otterbein 2-yard line early in the first quarter.
Â
"The goal-line stand was the turning point in the game," Doup said. "I liked the way our defense played. We put the defense in a bad spot a couple of times and they did a good job."
Â
Otterbein leads Wilmington in the series, 12-8, and has won the last seven meetings. The Cardinals defeated the Quakers, 30-14, at home last season.
Â
Following Wilmington, Otterbein is scheduled to return home to face 23rd-ranked Heidelberg University Oct. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.
