Cards Host Baldwin Wallace in Matchup of 4-1 OAC Teams

Coach Doup Radio Show - Week 6

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein football team remains at home this week to host a decisive matchup within the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC), taking on Baldwin Wallace University at 1:30 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals and Yellow Jackets, both 4-2 overall and 4-1 in OAC play, are currently in a three-way tie with John Carroll University for second place amongst the standings. Otterbein will be looking for a fourth-straight win in the series after scoring 20-unanswered points last year to walk away from Berea with a 20-9 victory.

"They are well coached and always ready to play," Otterbein head coach Tim Doup said of BW. "It will be an interesting matchup considering we have identical records and both teams will be fired up. I have always admired what Coach Snell has done with that program. It will be important, for both teams, to come out fast and gain the early advantage."

Otterbein did not have the advantage at halftime last Saturday against Muskingum, overcoming a 15-10 deficit at the break by forcing four turnovers, coming on four-consecutive possessions, on defense after intermission. It was the first time the Cards overcame a halftime deficit to win since last year at BW.

"We want three turnovers and three three-and-outs per game from the defense," Doup explained. "We had the three-and-outs and then managed to force all four of those turnovers down the stretch. It's always good to hit some goals, but it's obvious that we still didn't play the best. We will need to be much better this week."

The Otterbein defense will be forced to limit Baldwin Wallace dual-threat quarterback Tyler Moeglin, a senior who has 1,051 passing yards and 513 rushing yards on the year. Moeglin, with 15 combined touchdowns and just two interceptions, currently ranks fifth in the league for passing and sixth in rushing.

"In my opinion, he is probably the best quarterback that we have seen so far this season," Doup said. "He can run, throw, make good reads and is very slippery. We need to keep him contained and not let him get in space, because then he becomes even more dangerous."

Isaac Reed III helps compliment the Yellow Jacket running game while Bryon Cook, 24 catches for 314 yards and five touchdowns, serves as a nice threat on the outside at receiver. On the opposite side, junior defensive end Andy Schultz ranks fifth in the conference with 4.5 sacks.

Otterbein has had a few of its own players make headlines in recent weeks, most notably senior linebacker Drew Ervin and sophomore slot receiver Julian Lowe. Ervin, a three-time OAC 'Defensive Player of the Week' this season, ranks seventh nationally with 76 tackles (12.7/gm) after a game-high 14 last weekend. Lowe currently sits third nationally in receiving touchdowns (11), eighth in catches (48) and 26th in receiving yards (616).

"People are definitely starting to notice them a bit more and see what they are contributing," Doup said. "Drew is finding a way to make plays and perform well with the tools he has, despite maybe not even being a true linebacker. Julian just finds a way to get open, catches every ball and finds a way to put it in the end zone. Those two are playing really well for us."

Senior quarterback Kevan Green ranks second in the OAC with 12 touchdown passes and third amongst signal callers with 1,253 yards through the air. However, Otterbein is averaging just 114.5 yards per game on the ground compared to BW's 200.8, third-best in the league. Moeglin's legs and the BW ground game have helped the team convert 52 percent of third downs.
