Wilmington Pulls Away Late to Defeat Otterbein

Box Score

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University came up short in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) action Wednesday evening, suffering a 72-54 home loss to visiting Wilmington College in the Rike Center.

Both sides traded baskets throughout a close first half that featured six different ties. The Cardinals held a seven-point lead with under 2:00 to play before the break, but the Quakers closed the frame on an 8-1 spurt to tie the game at 32-32.

The Quakers then started the second half strong, but Otterbein only trailed by two, 51-49, after a jumper from senior Mary Corbett with 9:41 to play in the game. It would be mostly Wilmington from that point on as the Quakers put together a quick 10-2 run and pulled away down the stretch.

Brittaney Jefferson dropped a game-high 24 points off the bench for Wilmington while Ellie Kivell had 15 in a reserve role. The Quakers finished with a commanding 51-13 edge in bench scoring.

Chelsea Reed led Otterbein with 12 points while Amariah Huck nearly missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. The Cardinals shot just 25 percent for the game and 18 percent in the second half.

Otterbein closes out the week at home against crosstown-rival Capital, hosting the Crusaders at 5 p.m. as part of a men's and women's doubleheader in the Rike. Otterbein will be looking for some redemption after a 71-58 loss in Bexley back in December.
