Heidelberg controlled the shot margin in the opening half after building a 9-4 advantage, but it was Cardinal goalkeeper
Collin Hoffmann who stymied the Berg with five saves. Both teams earned corner-kick opportunities in the frame with five combined.
The beginning of the second half featured the most intense action of the game, as Heidelberg goalkeeper Jake Kress chased a ball just outside his own box and collided with Otterbein's
Noah Coons. Kress was issued a red card on the play after making contact with his cleat on the side of Coons.
The Berg played a man-down for the remainder of the match, but the Cards could not take advantage offensively of the extra-man opportunity despite totaling nine shots in regulation. The Student Princes unloaded 18 shots through the first 90 minutes.
Hoffmann recorded the game's highlight with a sublime save with just over eight minutes left in regulation, leaping just outside the goal line to swat the ball over the crossbar off a shot from midfield by Heidelberg's Christian Kiesel.
Both teams combined for seven shots over the course of the two overtime periods, with the Berg being responsible for four of them in the second extra frame. Hoffmann finished off a stellar game in goal for the Cards with 12 saves after going the distance.
