SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Otterbein University volleyball team split a pair of non-conference outings Saturday afternoon at the Wittenberg Tri-Match, defeating Maryville College (Tenn.) before falling to the host Tigers.
The Cardinals, now 15-9 on the season, will be back in action next week with a pair of home matches against John Carroll University, on Tuesday night, and then Saturday against Baldwin Wallace.
Otterbein defeats Maryville by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-27, 25-17, pulling away to win the first-two sets before almost coming from behind to win the third. The Scots had opened a 19-14 lead in that third frame before the Cards tied things at 22, 24, and 25.
Otterbein regained its form in the fourth set, breaking open a 5-5 tie with a quick 9-2 run that opened a cushion for good. The rest of the set never got within four points.

Marie Thornton led the way offensively with a new career-high 17 kills while classmate
Morgan Lowenkamp finished with 12. Setter
Andrea Miller dished out 42 assists as the Cards hit .126 as a team compared to Maryville's .086 clip.
Freshman libero
Ashlyn Leon had a season-high 31 digs while
Kalyn Schroer and
Olivia Harris also made it into double figures in the defensive category.
The Cardinals turned around to face No.3-ranked Wittenberg in their second match of the day, falling in straight sets by scores of 15-25, 21-25, 15-25. Lowenkamp paced Otterbein with eight kills, with Miller handing out a team-best 23 assists to accompany eight digs and pair of service aces.
Thornton checked in with seven kills while Leon again led the Cards with 15 assists, all part of the Cards' mark of 27 kills in the match. Witteneberg finished hitting .290 as a team with 44 kills.
Wittenberg jumped out to a 9-4 lead after taking the first set in swift fashion, before Otterbein battled back to cut the lead to one at 13-12. The Cards tied the set at 14 points apiece, before the Tigers manufactured an 11-8 run to capture the set and fuel another 10-point win in set three.
