WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University cross country teams opened their seasons Thursday evening with the annual Early Bird Open, hosting cross-town Capital University in a dual-competition.
The Cardinals flew past the Crusaders in both 5K races, taking the top-nine spots on the men's side and then crossing the first six females (and 12 of the first 13) in the second race. The Otterbein women were split into two teams.
Sophomores Claire Lamb and Heather Sandvik, finishing with respective times of 19:00.76 and 19:15.65, led the way for the women while classmate Katy Foltz was fairly close at 19:25.52. Alex Winter, Kira Judd and Kierra Lathrop rounded out those top-six finishers.

Ian Kellogg topped the pack on the men's side with a time of 16:24.07 while newcomers
Jacob Thompson (16:31.09) and
Wyatt Gardner (16:39.14) weren't far behind.
Trevor Dilley and
Joey Coogan also broke 17:00 for a group that had five freshmen finish inside the top 10.
The Cards will take two weeks off to continue training before hosting the Otterbein Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Lehman Cross Country Course.
