NORTH MANCEHSTER, Ind. – The Otterbein women's hoops squad picked up its first win of the young season Saturday afternoon following a 64-54 defeat of Ohio Wesleyan on day two of the Manchester Classic.
The Cardinals (1-1 overall) dropped their first game of the year on Friday evening against No. 11-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which led to them drawing familiar foe OWU after the Bishops fell 56-55 to host Manchester in the night cap.
Otterbein jumped out to a 16-6 advantage through one quarter of play as junior
Dani Kissel ignited the Cardinal scoring effort with seven first-quarter points.
The Battling Bishops clawed their way back in the next frame, outscoring the Cardinals 17-14 to narrow their deficit to seven points going into halftime. Junior
Alex Schaffer, who totaled eight points off the bench against UW-Oshkosh, helped the Cards out with four points in the quarter.
OWU resumed its scoring prowess in the third quarter as well pouring in 27 points to come all the way back from a struggle in the initial quarter for a 50-44 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
Otterbein put the pedal to the metal in the final frame with a 20-point effort while holding OWU to just four points on two field goals. The Bishops shot under 12 percent in the quarter, as the Cards enjoyed a solid 50 percent mark from the floor to help secure the victory.
Kissel, who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished the contest with a team-high 18 points on a stellar 7-of-10 shooting mark, including four three-pointers. Senior
Kiersten Taylor also put forth a solid game, registering a double-double with 13 points and a game-best 11 rebounds.
Sophomore
Abbie Scholz also contributed well in the Cardinal frontcourt, scoring 11 points while corralling eight rebounds.
Otterbein concluded the game shooting 44 percent while also holding a commanding 17-2 advantage in bench points. The win was also the 350th in the career of 27th-year head coach
Connie Richardson.
The Cardinals turn around to face Ohio Wesleyan on the road this coming Tuesday night in Delaware, Ohio. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
