WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Otterbein women's basketball team dropped a 66-58 contest at Wilmington on Wednesday night in an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup inside Raizk Arena.
Otterbein falls to 9-13 overall and 5-10 in league play with three games remaining in the regular season. The Cardinals will host their final two home games of the regular season beginning Saturday on senior day against Muskingum at 3 p.m.
The Cards scored two of the first three baskets of the game on consecutive made shots in the paint by forwards
Abbie Scholz and
Kiersten Taylor. Wilmington followed with a 10-2 scoring run to take an early 12-6 advantage, prompting an Otterbein timeout.
Otterbein responded out of the timeout by holding the Quakers scoreless over the final 3:17 of the frame, notching four points to pull within one possession of Wilmington heading into the second period.
Wilmington opened the quarter by scoring the first four points to increase its lead to 16-10, but Otterbein battled back and trimmed its deficit to one point at 18-17 with 4:40 left.
The Cardinals remained within two possessions of the Quakers over the next three minutes of play and despite converting just two field goals.
Wilmington conversely boosted its lead to 33-24 at the break, after leading by as many as 11 points, finishing the half with a 48.3 percent mark from the floor.
A made layup by Taylor at the 5:43 mark of the third period pulled the Cards within seven points before the Quakers held Otterbein scoreless for over three minutes while putting together an 11-0 run to take a 46-28 lead.
Wilmington entered the final frame with a 16-point advantage and held a 54-40 lead with 7:10 remaining prior to Otterbein fighting back within eight points following a 12-6 run.
The Quakers converted a layup on their next possession, followed by a 5-of-6 mark from the charity stripe down the stretch. Wilmington ended the game with a 23-10 edge in points off turnovers.
Taylor led the Cards with 19 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting mark with five rebounds. Guard
