WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinal volleyball squad finished off a sweep through its 2017 Fall Classic Saturday afternoon, flying past North Park University and Washington and Jefferson College inside the Rike Center.
Otterbein, now 4-0 on the young season, will have a mid-week match at Ohio Christian on Tuesday before traveling to the Kenyon Invitational next weekend.
The first three sets of the morning session against North Park all ended in the same score, with the Cards taking a pair of 25-20 victories before the Vikings emerged by the same score in the third.
Otterbein eventually finished the job with a comfortable fourth-set triumph, opening a quick 6-1 lead to force a North Park timeout and then never trail throughout. NPU was able to claw within 9-7 momentarily, but the Cardinals responded with an 11-2 scoring run to put the match away.
Senior middle
Marie Thornton was very efficient with 11 kills, and just one error, on 17 attempts to hit a blistering .588 for the morning.
Hadley Sterett had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs, to go along with a match-best four service aces, while
Morgan Lowenkamp chipped in eight kills.
Setter
Andrea Miller continued her efforts up front with 41 assists while libero
Ashlyn Leon dug 17 balls in the back.
The Cardinals followed up with a convincing 3-1 victory in their second match of the day against Washington and Jefferson. Otterbein took sets one and two by scores of 25-21 and 25-19, before Washington and Jefferson emerged with a 25-21 win of its own in set three to force what proved to be a fourth and final set.
The Cards jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in the fourth set, forcing the Presidents to use a timeout, before increasing their advantage to 10-1. Otterbein extended its lead shortly after to 13-5 prior to collecting four-straight points en route to eight of the next 12 points to complete the match.
Sterett hit a stellar .475 to go along with a match-best 23 kills, while picking up six digs in the process. Lowenkamp and junior
Olivia Harris notched 11 kills apiece, while Harris committed no errors and collected 12 digs.
Thornton and freshman
Alyssa Elsea combined for 15 kills, while Miller dished out a match-high 48 assists. She finished the weekend with a whopping 179 over the four outings.
The all-tournament team was also announced following the match, with Lowenkamp and Sterett securing a spot on the squad for the Cardinals. Other selections include: Leah Buck (Saint Mary's College), Kelly Clinton (North Park), Kasey Parkhurst (Capital), and Abbey Eich (Washington and Jefferson).
