WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's basketball team saw its nine-game win streak come to an end Saturday following a 73-67 loss to Mount Union in its regular-season finale.
Otterbein (16-9 overall) finishes the regular season with a 12-6 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play to secure the No. 4 seed and a home game on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of next week's tournament. The Cardinals will host fifth-seeded Baldwin Wallace as the two sides split their season series.
Mount Union (15-10, 12-6 OAC) in turn claims the third-seed in the OAC Tournament by way of a tiebreaker over the Cardinals, and will host Capital in its quarterfinal round.
The Purple Raiders jumped out to a 5-0 advantage less than a minute into the contest, but it was the Cards which quickly surged back with a 17-3 scoring run thanks to junior
Alex Schaffer igniting the offense with five points over that span.
A 17-12 first-quarter lead for Otterbein turned into a nine-point advantage as the time winded down below five minutes in the half as sophomore
Delaney Cutteridge connected on a pair of free throws to help boost the Cards' lead.
Mount Union then manufactured a run of its own, outscoring Otterbein 10-5 over the final five minutes to trim the deficit to 33-29 heading into halftime. Senior
Kiersten Taylor and junior
Ali Cartnal led the way at the break with six points apiece.
The score remained within two possessions through the mid-way point of the third period, until Schaffer again helped spark the Cardinals with five-straight points followed by an old-fashioned three-point play from junior
Dani Kissel.
Otterbein claimed its largest lead of the game at 52-42 with 2:33 left in the quarter, before the Cards took an eight-point advantage into the final frame.
Mount Union's scoring output over the final 10 minutes was impressive as it poured in 29 points, its largest quarter of the afternoon by far, tying the game at 57 points apiece with less than six minutes remaining before taking a 60-58 lead two possessions later, its first since the initial quarter.
The Cards trailed by as many as seven points over the final 4:33 of action, but managed to climb back within three points with 15 seconds left before the Raiders' Rachel Tinkey converted three of their final four foul shots down the stretch.
Schaffer, one of four players in double figures for the Cards, notched a career-high 13 points off the bench to go with five rebounds. Kissel and Cutteridge each scored 11 points, including a combined 7-of-9 mark from the charity stripe, while Cartnal chipped in 10 points.
Mount Union's Jaime Sanborn led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-10 shooting to accompany five rebounds and three assists, including an impressive 9-of-10 mark from the free-throw line.
The nine-game win streak for the Cardinals was the second-longest undefeated span in program history, one shy of program record (10) matched back in 2012-13.
