MSJ Dual Results
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Otterbein wrestling team recently concluded its 2018-19 regular season with a pair of road events, traveling to the Mid-State Tournament over the weekend before visiting Mount St. Joseph Tuesday night for a culminating dual.
The Cardinals sent a mixed roster up to Alma College in Michigan for the Mid-States, with junior
Donny Didion competing his way to a runner-up finish in the 174-pound division. Included in his run was a fall and then a pair of overtime victories.
Braden Neuberger (197) and
Luke Shively (285) picked up three wins each at Mid-States in their respective brackets, with Shively tallying a pair of falls in the process.
Luke Hess went 2-2 with a pin at 197 while
Dylan Gray,
Denver Aydelott and
Hunter Stoffer all snagged a victory as well.
Otterbein then worked most of its starters back in at Mount St. Joseph, unfortunately falling by a score of 25-19 after a few close decision losses tipped the team result.
Both sides exchanged forfeits to begin the night before the Lions secured three-straight decisions to open a 15-6 lead. Aydelott (165) stopped the run with a nice 12-4 major decision in his bout before the schools traded pins.
Freshman
Jarrod Setliff (184) tallied his fall at 2:45 of the opening round, giving him a team-best 16 on the year so far.
Corbin Bunsold, ranked No. 22 nationally in the latest D3Wrestle poll, then dropped just his fifth match all season against yet another nationally-ranked opponent. This time, No. 18-ranked Antonio McCloud pulled away for a major decision on the MSJ side.
Otterbein culminated the dual behind undefeated heavyweight
Drew Kasper, who finished his regular season a perfect 25-0 after a decision victory. A returning national qualifier at 197, Kasper will now look to make it back to the NCAA Championships this year in the 285-pound bracket.
The entire Cardinal lineup will regroup and begin prepping for the
NCAA Central Regional next weekend, scheduled to take place February 22 and 23 at Wabash College once again. The top-three placers in each weight classes will earn a ticket to the national stage in Virginia.
