WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein wrestling team, hosting just its second (and final) home dual of the season Wednesday night, found a groove midway through against Muskingum to go on and win a 33-16 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) tussle inside the Rike Center.
The Cardinals won six of the last seven bouts after initially falling behind 10-0, beating the Muskies for a fifth-straight time since relaunching the program back in 2016. Otterbein also prevailed in three other exhibition matches on the night.
HOW IT WENT DOWN:
- Muskingum posted two decisions and a late major as the varsity dual begin, settling into a 10-0 lead.
Â
- Otterbein kicked into gear as its big guns took the mat. Ryan Whitten (157), the newest OAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month, tallied a pin less than 90 seconds in while newcomer Cale Callahan (165) did the same at the 2:36 mark of his showdown.
Â
- Muskie leader Carter Layton kept the visitors within 18-16 on the team scoreboard after a fall in the 174-pound matchup.
Â
- However, No. 12-ranked Joey Bradberry responded with a fall at 1:40 and then fellow senior Jarrod Setliff showed some late grit (battling through injury/fatigue) in outlasting Andrew McFee for a roller-coaster decision… 17-14.
Â
- Nathan Leko (149) and Bradley Minnard (285) earned victories by way of forfeit.
Â
- The Cardinals also received three exhibition wins. Eric Saddler tallied a 39-second pin to open the night before Kyle De Moss registered a 12-0 shutout. Senior Sam Shalvey, a program favorite, capped the action by holding on for a narrow 5-4 decision.
Â
LOOKING CLOSER:
- Setliff finishes 5-1Â within OAC action this season. He was an all-league performer last winter.
Â
- Bradberry, nearing the Top-10 of the D3wrestle.com national rankings, is now 18-3 overall this year.|
Â
- Whitten and Callahan, training partners since the summer, are now a combined 47-11 in the middle of the lineup.
Â
- Prior to the match, Otterbein recognized Setliff, Bradberry, Minnard, Shalvey and Chase Nelson (125 lbs) for their contributions to the program as part of Senior Night.
UP NEXT:
- Otterbein will have a few weeks off to regroup and prep for the NCAA Central Regionals, scheduled for February 25-26 up at Adrian College in Michigan.
