WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Another football season is just weeks away, which means two more annual traditions were continued this week for Otterbein as preseason camp begins.
A pair of seniors (and high school teammates from nearby Olentangy) were selected for prestigious honors to help honor the life/memories of fallen Cardinals…
Linebacker
Colton Doup becomes the newest member of the program to earn the No. 5 jersey, continuing the tradition of recognizing former quarterback Josh Worthington. The Grove City native tragically lost his life in a 2004 car accident when a drunk driver struck his vehicle on Christmas Eve. He will always be remembered for the hard work, dedication and commitment he displayed.
Doup, a multi-year starter at middle linebacker, ranked fifth on the team in tackles last fall and holds a 3.1 GPA as a double major in criminology/justice studies and psychology. He sheds his former number of 52, which was also worn by his father (and current head coach)
Tim Doup back during his playing days.
"This is a blessing when you think of the traditions with number 5" Colton said. "Obviously Josh… but also with everyone else that I've played with or come to know growing up as my idols. It's a great feeling and I can't wait for this season."
SIGNIFICANCE OF NUMBER 5
Zack Martin, a three-year starter on the offensive line, has been selected to use the locker formerly held by the late Nigel Chatman. A standout nose guard, the Reynoldsburg product was also killed in a car accident (on his way practice) just one day before the 2019 season opener… after swerving to avoid a collision up ahead. Chatman was also known for his unique/outgoing personality both around campus and in the locker room.
Martin currently holds a 3.76 cumulative GPA as an accounting major and has made the Academic All-OAC list multiple times.
"Being a freshman when that happened with Nigel was very tragic, but it's been cool seeing how everyone has come together since and honor him," Martin began. "Nigel was a vocal and energetic kid who loved football. I've tried to shape myself like that and really admire how he approached life."
POWER OF NUMBER 97
Otterbein practices on the field for the first time Thursday afternoon and will eventually launch its season come September 3 at Ohio Wesleyan.
