ALLIANCE, Ohio – It was a good start with a better ending Saturday afternoon for the Otterbein Wrestling team, which capped a 2-1 effort in the OAC Quad Meet by defeating Heidelberg for the first time in program history.
The Cardinals, now an even 3-3 within the Ohio Athletic Conference, opened the day by posting a 59-0 shutout against Wilmington…
Otterbein then dropped a tough 33-7 matchup against host Mount Union in the middle session. Regrouping nicely, the Cards prevailed in multiple close matches to secure a notable 19-15 triumph against the 'Berg.

WILMINGTON RECAP:
The Quakers forfeited six bouts and saw the Cardinals earn victories in the other four that did take place.
Austin Amens (2:18) and
Logan Cormell (2:40) both landed pins in the first period while heavyweight
Zac Stray charted his fall early in the third frame.

MOUNT UNION RECAP:
The Raiders claimed the initial five bouts to take a lead that it would never relinquish, despite
Andrew Sas (141 lbs) and
Nathan Leko (149 lbs) settling for tight decision losses.
Ryan Whitten got Otterbein on the board in the 165-pound contest in true workmanlike fashion, notching a few critical points to hold off Jeff Dunfee in a 3-0 final.
Kyle De Moss came up short at 184 pounds and Jarrodd Setliff tallied the remaining points for Otterbein, pulling away to topple AJ Lunardi for a 12-2 major.
--------
HEIDELBERG RECAP:
The Cardinals entered having never defeated the Student Princes in five tries, including a pair of very competitive dual losses by scores of 26-20 and 28-18 in recent memory.
This time around, Otterbein set a strong tone in the lighter weight and did just enough down the back half of its lineup.
Noah Houchins (125) grinded his way to an 8-6 decision for starters…
After
Zach Orseno unfortunately settled one point short at 133, the Cardinals found a groove in taking the next four bouts. Sas earned a 7-1 decision, Leko won his by an 8-4 count, Amens finished on top 8-3, and Whitten used another systematic/technical performance to best Carson Pottinger 3-1.
That pushed Otterbein ahead 15-3 but Heidelberg wouldn't go quietly, posting a tech fall in the next bout followed by a major decision to bring the gap to just 15-12.
Setliff would undoubtedly clinch the day in his 197-pound contest, picking quality spots en route to a 10-2 major. Stray battled admirably in the culminating showdown but was forced to swallow a 3-2 loss.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Otterbein steps away from conference action next weekend by traveling to the Wheaton Invitational, slated for Friday and Saturday in Illinois.
