The Otterbein Tennis programs experienced a memorable trip abroad to Italy this summer, as members from both the men's and women's teams (along with coaches and parents) were able to enjoy an eight-day adventure.
The team flew into Rome and began with a practice the following morning at Vianello Tennis Club. In addition to hard courts and grass, this reputable venue also featured red clay… a surface that most Otterbein players had never been able to hit on before. (*Clay courts accentuate spin and put a higher premium on both slice and topspin)
After that initial practice, the travel party explored Vatican City and was able to maneuver around at their own pace. Everyone needed to put their "walking shoes" on during the second day with a guided tour through the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and downtown Rome.
"This was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience that has now made my college journey even more worthwhile," said
Olivia Eckels. "I will always remember this trip and remain continuously grateful for all of the opportunities that Otterbein Tennis has given me."
Official competition arrived on the fourth day, where the Cardinals returned to Vianello and laced up against the host club in both singles and doubles. Rain unfortunately shortened the format despite still getting roughly 2.5 hours in, benefited nicely by red clay absorbing moisture and allowing for play in damp conditions.
The women's lineup won rather handily while the men picked up victories from
Will Newberry (over Matteo Thouverai) and
Dylan Shook (over Antonio Colella), who each won their singles matches in three sets.
"Getting the opportunity to travel abroad with the team and play in Italy will be something I never forget," Shook said. "It was invaluable spending time with each other and making lasting memories. The world is a big place and it was impactful seeing a new part of it."

After Rome, the group traveled just over three hours north to Prato (and Tennis Club Bisenzio) as the smaller city would play host to a second exhibition of the trip.
Both coaches struggled through communication but, thanks to Otterbein's dedicated tour guide (Javi), the opponents were able to decide on a mixed format. This setup placed an American with each Italian player for every doubles competition and, for six hours, men and women teamed on the same court in multiple round-robin showdowns. After the match, the Cards were invited to a dinner attended by club representatives and even the mayor of Prato!
The following day, everyone ventured to Florence and had the opportunity for a bike tour that helped culminate the trip. A challenging path led through town and up a large hill, but fittingly resulted in an incredible view as a nice punctuation.
"This was an awesome experience for the kids, and watching them attempt to communicate with our Italian competition in a doubles format was enjoyable for players, coaches, and family," said head coach
Tyler Stephen. "Those types of settings provide built-in learning moments that you just can't duplicate. We are extremely fortunate to have had this opportunity to play internationally and explore a foreign country. Each of these kids will remember it for the rest of their lives."
Both Otterbein tennis teams have been frequents near/atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings in recent years, including the women's team having won three straight regular-season titles.
