WINCHESTER, Va. – The Otterbein University men's wrestling team competed at the Shenandoah Invitational on Sunday, earning several solid individual performances on its way to an eighth-place team finish with 90.5 points.
The Cardinals opened the event with five entrants across the 125–149 weight classes. At 125, freshman Marcy Olivo wrestled through a pair of competitive matches. In the 133, 141 and 149 brackets, freshman Ryan Hydorn, sophomore Reid Todhunter and senior Austin Winn each went 1-2 on the day, while senior Zach Orseno completed the group with two hard-fought bouts in the 149 division.
Otterbein had a large contingent at 157, highlighted by a strong outing from sophomore Luke Dolan. Dolan finished as the runner-up after going 4-1 and scoring 12 team points. His day included a fall in 1:13, a 17-2 tech fall in 4:50, a 40-second pin, and a 5-1 decision before a medical forfeit in the final. Junior Jason Patterson picked up a win to finish 1-2, while senior Owen Crabtree and sophomore Radley Spencer added 1-2 marks.
In the 165 division, senior Carter Mottley earned a victory as part of a 1-2 showing. Senior Sam Wegesin finished the day 0-2.
Four Cardinals represented Otterbein at 174. Sophomore Eli Cassady placed eighth after going 3-3, responding from an opening loss with tech falls of 17-1 (2:20) and at 7:00, followed by a 7-2 decision before dropping his final two bouts. Freshman Dallas Downs earned a win to finish 1-2, and sophomore Ethan Guevara and freshman Javon Lewis added 1-2 efforts of their own.
At 184, senior Logan Cormell delivered one of the team's top performances, placing third with a 3-1 record. He opened with an 11-3 major decision and a 12-5 decision, dropped a tech fall in the semifinals, and then secured third place with a pin in 3:18.
Senior Caiden Hooks was the runner-up in the 197 bracket after going 2-1 and totaling 12 points. Hooks won his opener by a 4-0 decision and followed with a pin in 5:30 before falling in the championship match.
The Cardinals closed the day with two heavyweights at 285. Junior Carter Wallace worked through two tough bouts, while senior Matthew Bachie turned in a 2-2 performance. Bachie rebounded from an opening loss with a pin in 3:13 and a 5-1 decision before dropping his final contest.
Otterbein will return to the mat on November 19 for its home opener, scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Rike Center.
