Cardinals finish fourth at ONU Invitational

ADA, Ohio – Led by a runner-up finish by Luke Dolan, the Otterbein University men's wrestling team placed fourth out of 13 teams at the ONU Invitational. As a team, the Cardinals put up 112.5 points and saw 10 wrestlers place. 

At 125, freshman Marcy Olivo went 1-3 on the day. His win came in a 16-0 tech fall over Ohio Northern's Will Miller. 

In the 133 bracket, Gabe Thacker finished fifth, turning in a 3-2 record. In the run to a fifth place finish, the junior earned a 10-4 decision and a 16-1 tech fall. Freshman Ryan Hydorn was seventh at 133 after a 2-2 Saturday. After dropping his first bout, Hydorn answered with a 22-6 tech fall. In the seventh place match, he earned a 15-0 tech fall over W&J's Drake Buzzard.

Zach Orseno turned in a 5-1 record en route to a fifth place finish at 149. In that run he earned a 21-5 tech fall over Heidelberg's Aaron Cole and a pin in 2:18 over Jeremiah Stalling (Bethany).  Andrew Sas was seventh in the weight class, as the senior claimed a 13-2 major decision and a fall in 6:20 as part of a 4-1 performance. Sophomore Radley Spencer was 0-2.

Dolan's runner-up finish was the team's highest placer on the day, competing at 157. His first win was a pin in 1:54 against OWU's Glenn Simley. He followed that with a 7-2 victory before advancing to the championship bout with a pin in just 1:44 over Jovanni Greco (Ohio Northern). Owen Crabtree, Jason Patterson and John Nestor were all 0-2 on Saturday.

Senior Carter Mottley took fourth, one of two Cardinals to compete at 165. Mottley went 3-2 on Saturday, starting the tournament with a pin in 1:08 (Isaac Leppert, MSJ). He followed with a 17-10 win and later earned a 9-1 major decision. Sam Wegesin finished the day 0-2.

Three Cardinals competed at 174 – Eli Cassady, Ethan Guevara and Dallas Downs. Guevara was 1-2 while Cssady and Downs finished Saturday with an 0-2 record.

At 184, Javon Lewis placed fourth, going 4-2. After a loss, he answered with a pin in 54 seconds over Ohio Wesleyan's Owen Spilker. He added a major decision on the day as well. Logan Cormell was fifth in the event, also turning in a 4-2 performance. Cormell pinned a pair of opponents (1:31, 4:44) and added a tech fall as well. 

Both Cardinals that competed at 197 in Caiden Hooks and Karson Nail placed, with Nail taking third and Hooks claiming sixth. Nail rebounded after a first round loss with four consecutive victories, three coming via falls. Hooks went 3-3, as all three of his victories were pins. He earned falls in 2:46, 49 seconds and 1:10.

In the 285 bracket, Matthew Bachie was 1-2 with his win coming in a tight 4-0 decision over Olivet's Malachi Loewen. Carter Wallace completed the day 0-2.

The Cardinals will compete in their final competition of the 2025 calendar year next Saturday at the Berg Holiday Duals, hosted by Heidelberg University.
