Women's tennis battles tough with Asbury

Box Score WESTERVILLE – Back on their home courts for the first time this spring, the Otterbein University women's tennis team battled tough, but dropped a 5-2 decision to Asbury University.

The Eagles won at first and second doubles to claim the point. Breanna Ball and Daniela De Mata fell in a tight 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles, and Niya Bell and Taryn Simmers fell in a gritty 6-4 match at No. 2 doubles. In the final doubles match, Caitlin Pennington and Raina Smith cruised to a 6-0 win for the Cardinals.

Asbury won the first four singles matches, despite some close matches and good fights by the Cardinals. In the No. 3 singles slot, Simmers fell by a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Bell competed in the fourth singles position and narrowly fell in a tiebreaker. The sophomore won the first 6-3 before falling 6-4 in the second set. In the tiebreaker, Asbury came away with an 11-9 margin to take the match.

The tiebreakers continued into No. 5 singles, where Pennington won the first set 6-0, but was forced into a decisive set following a 6-3 loss. Pennington put together an incredible final set to win the tiebreaker 14-12.

At the final singles position, freshman Molly Jones earned a win. She defeated Asbury's Maryalice McVey by a 6-1, 6-3 score.

Otterbein will return to the courts on Feb. 22 for a 9 a.m. match at The College of Wooster.
