Dolan, Nail earn runner-up finishes at Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – Luke Dolan and Karson Nail wrestled their way to runner-up finishes to pace the Otterbein men's wrestling team at the John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace. As a team, the Cardinals finished sixth out of 13 squads, scoring 111.5 points.

Dolan was masterful at 157, earning three bonus point wins to start the day. Following an 18-3 tech fall over Mount Union's Cody Miller, he pinned Ryan Foster (Ohio Northern) in 2:41 and John Conover (Case Western Reserve) in 3:27. In his semifinal bout, he defeated Baldwin Wallace's Caleb Hoffman, 9-5. Dolan's run came to an end, dropping the championship match.

Nail competed at 197 and won with three consecutive pins to advance to the championship match. After a 3:42 fall over Trenton Mead (Thiel), his next two falls came in the first period with a 1:14 win over Shane Tressler (Eastern) and a 1:15 victory over Chuck Thomas (Ohio Wesleyan). In a battle in the final matchup, Nail narrowly lost, 4-2.

At 125, freshman Marcy Olivio went 1-2 on the day. After an opening round loss, he picked up a 16-12 overtime win over Theil's Aidan Carter.

Ryan Hydorn was 1-2 at 133, recording a pin in his second bout. The freshman pinned W&J's Drake Buzzard in 1:46. Also competing at 133 was Gabe Thacker. Thacker started his day with a second period fall (3:46) over Niagara CC's Vincenz Falsetti before dropping his next two matches.

Senior Andrew Sas finished fifth for the Cardinals at 141. Sas started the day by picking up a 17-1 technical fall over Richard Morales (Alfred State). Coming off a tough overtime loss in his second bout, Sas fired off a pair of tech fall wins over Tyler Simons (Alfred State, 17-2) and Ryan Mansueto (Eastern, 17-1).

Austin Winn competed at 149 and posted a 1-2 record. He recorded a fall in 4:55 after a first round loss over Gabe Bulugaris of Ohio Wesleyan.

In addition to Dolan, Otterbein saw Owen Crabtree and John Nestor wrestle at 157. Both falling into the consolation bracket, Crabtree won via 13-3 major decision over Nestor in their next match. Crabtree dropped his following bout to turn in a 1-2 day.

Seniors Carter Mottley and Sam Wegesin were in the 165-pound bracket, with Mottley finishing fourth. Mottley started his day with a first period fall over CWRU's Justin Sweeney (2:02) before a resounding 19-0 tech fall over Anthony Ceriana (Thiel). Dropping his semifinal match, he fell in a tight 9-7 decision in the third place bout to Hunter Buckland of Ohio Northern. Wegesin grinded out a 14-11 victory against Landon Mead (Thiel) but a loss knocked him into the consolation bracket. He fell in his next match, going 1-2 .

Eli Cassady placed sixth for Otterbein at 174. Coming off a loss to open the day, he fought for a 13-8 win over Chris Herriman (Alfred State) and registered a fall in 3:40 over Cole Porter of Baldwin Wallace. He dropped his next two bouts to take sixth. Peyton Beavers went 1-2 for Otterbein, highlighted by a fall in 4:41 over George Racz (Alfred State).

At 184, Caiden Hooks and Dallas Downs both competed for the Cardinals. Hooks went 1-2 with a gritty 8-3 win over St John Fisher's Bryaden Wright. Downs finished the day 0-2.

Rounding out the day, Matthew Bachie and Carter Wallace wrestled in the heavyweight bracket. Bachie rebounded after a first round loss to pin Sam Cruster (Ohio Northern) in 2:56. Bachie went 1-2 and Wallace finished 0-2.

The Cardinals will head back to the Cleveland area next Saturday to compete in the John Carroll Open. Matches commence at 9 a.m.
