BEXLEY, OHIO— The Otterbein University men's basketball team, seeded sixth, ended its season with a 76-47 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal loss to #3 seed Capital University Tuesday evening at the Capital Center.
The Cardinals dropped to 13-13 while the Crusaders improved to 18-8 and advanced to the OAC semifinals to play John Carroll, who defeated Mount Union 75-68 today in University Heights.
Capital started off hot, jumping out to a 16-4 lead four minutes into the game. The Crusaders were spurred by junior guard Kelly Winter who accounted for 11 of the team’s first 16 points before finishing the half with 13.
The Cards cut the lead to 20-14 after a three-pointer by senior forward Alan Kavanaugh at the 12-minute mark, but couldn’t keep the lead to single digits as the Crusaders took a 36-27 lead into the locker room after the first half.
The second half started about the same as the first as Capital pushed its lead to 52-30 with a three-pointer by senior forward Adam Johns with 13:16 left.
Freshman forward Max Van Meter converted a three-point play midway through the second half to cut the lead to 54-37, but Capital quickly answered with a three-pointer by sophomore forward Spencer Niekamp thwarting a potential Otterbein run.
Robertson led all scorers with 23 points while grabbing nine rebounds. Winter contributed 15 points.
Van Meter led Otterbein with 18 points.
