MASON, OHIO—The Otterbein University men’s and women’s tennis teams bowed out of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament, falling in the semifinals played Friday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
The women’s team, seeded fourth, took top-seeded Ohio Northern University to the distance before dropping a hard-fought 5-4 decision. The men’s squad, seeded third, fell 5-1 to second-seeded John Carroll University.
The Lady Cardinals found themselves trailing 2-1 after doubles play, and 3-1 after Ohio Northern won third singles. Otterbein won three of the next four singles courts—senior Kylie Hammons winning fourth singles, sophomore Taylor Jordan taking second singles, and freshman Julie Stroyne winning first singles—to even the score 4-4 with sixth singles remaining to decide the match.
Otterbein junior Angela Sammons took the first set in sixth singles, 6-2, lost the second set, 6-2, and held a 5-2 lead in the third set before Ohio Northern’s Lauren Rife fought back to win 7-5 and give her team the 5-4 victory.
The men’s squad fell into a 4-0 hole early, losing all three doubles matches and first singles before junior Ryan Roberts broke through to win sixth singles, 6-3, 6-2 to make it 4-1. The Blue Streaks won second singles to end the match and win 5-1.
The Otterbein women’s team finishes the season with a 14-9 record while the men end the year at 12-11.
